• Partnering with grassroots advocacy groups like Moms Demand Action to raise national awareness for the issue of gun control and encourage constituent advocacy.

  • Ongoing support for the establishment of a Select Committee on Gun Violence Prevention. This committee would allow for the critical examination of the overwhelming issue of mass shootings and other gun-related concerns.

  • Confronting her own party to stop the use of taxpayer money to allow the NRA to purchase ammunition in her first term.


  • Sponsor, H.R. 1475: Gun Trafficking Prevention Act of 2017. Amends the criminal code to treat trafficking firearms as a felony at the federal level. This would decrease illegal and “straw” purchases that allow guns into the hands of those who would not otherwise be able to buy them. 


  • Sponsor, H.R. 822: The Firearm Risk Prevention Act of 2019. Requires gun owners to purchase more gun liability insurance, incentivizing responsible gun ownership and practices.


  • Sponsor, H.R. 2380: Handgun Trigger Safety Act of 2017. Prompts the National Institute of Justice to research and develop technology that would allow handguns to be customized only to be fired by a specific user and establishes a timeline to retrofit existing handguns.


  • Co-Sponsor, H.R. 1025: Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993.  Mandates that any individual purchasing a firearm from a federally licensed dealer be subject to a background check.

Inaction is literally killing us

As the proud owner of a lifetime “F” from the NRA, Carolyn has worked to ban assault weapons, high capacity magazines, and bump stocks, worked with the NY-12 community and her colleagues in government to end gun violence, held town halls on gun violence and attended rallies to end gun violence.

  • Provisions of her Hadiya Pendleton & Nyasia Pryear-Yard Gun Trafficking and Crime Prevention Act of 2021 made it into the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act that President Biden signed into law.

  • Winning $25 million in CDC gun violence research funding, the first in over 20 years, (since the passage of the Dickey Amendment) with the Gun Violence Prevention Research Act of 2019 (H.R. 674). 


  • Fighting white supremacist domestic terrorism by opposing the Trump administration's decision to de-fund law enforcement programs dealing with these groups


  • Supporting the universal background check policy and reinforcing the already established background check system with The NICS Review and Strengthening the National Instant Criminal Background Check System Acts. Carolyn has also sponsored the Gun Show Loophole Closing Act of 2019 (H.R. 820) which prevents gun show participants from exploiting the rule that exempts them from background checks and subjecting them to the same standard check undergone by every gun-store firearm purchaser. 


  • Supporting mental health resources for law enforcement officers and other high-suicide-risk individuals. 


  • Advocating for the passage of legislation designed to keep Americans safe from gun-violence including the No Fly No Buy amendment, which prevents individuals on the no-fly list from purchasing weapons, and red-flag laws that keep guns out of the hands of those who might be a danger to themselves or others.
