Immigration
Congresswoman Maloney has always been proud that America is a nation of immigrants, and she believes that legal avenues to citizenship should be available to hardworking members of our society. Carolyn has pursued comprehensive and compassionate immigration reform that protects our borders but is still dictated by our American values and human decency. There are countless hard-working immigrants who want nothing more than to be Americans, and Carolyn has fought for reasonable avenues so that those who seek citizenship may have paths to obtain it.
- The DREAM Act, which Carolyn co-sponsored, is a vital effort to provide temporary residency to undocumented immigrants who were brought to America as children. Under the Act, immigrants could apply to stay in the United States when they graduated from high school, as long as they either enroll in college or enlist in the military. Eligible immigrants have been in the USA since childhood - many consider this country their home and think of themselves themselves as just as American as anyone whose family dates back to the Mayflower. More educated, patriotic Americans means a stronger economy creating more jobs and a stronger military protecting our citizens.
- The Uniting American Families Act would bring family back to the center of American immigration policy. Carolyn co-sponsored this bill to expand family immigration provisions to gay and lesbian couples. She has also worked to allow orphans and widows in LGBT families to keep visa eligibility after the death of an American spouse.
