TELL SPEAKER BOEHNER AND THE REPUBLICANS THAT WOMEN MATTER

The Republicans’ assaults on women’s personal liberty, women’s economic equality and even basic women’s health are just plain wrong. These attacks on women are stunning in their scope, appalling in their indifference, and outrageous in their arrogance.

Republicans in the House recently refused to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act without rolling back protections for millions of women in America. Republicans chose not to defend Native American, undocumented, and LBGT victims who suffer domestic violence or sexual assault.

And the Violence Against Women Act is only the beginning.

HR 358, the “Protect Life Act,” would let physicians “exercise their conscience” by refusing to perform an abortion on women who faced life-threatening medical emergencies as a result of their pregnancy.

Republicans passed it in the House.

An amendment to the budget would have eliminated all Title X family planning funds and abolished all government support for Planned Parenthood. It would have denied millions of low-income women HIV testing, birth control, and cancer screenings.

Republicans passed it in the House.

S. 3220, the “Paycheck Fairness Act,” would have helped women find out if their male colleagues were making more than they were for the same work. It would have helped fight discrimination and enforce equal pay.

Republicans killed it in the Senate, and did not even let the House vote on this important bill.

They like to say there’s no war on women.... but the facts disagree. The Republicans’ legislative agenda makes it harder to fight workplace discrimination, would make women’s health care less accessible and more expensive, and would make it harder to help battered women in desperate need.

They’ve even attacked contraception. Republicans tried to let employers deny birth control coverage to their employees. When Democrats objected, Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee held a hearing about women’s health care – without a single woman on the the witness list. The obvious question was: Where are the women?

So today, we answer that question. Women, and like-minded men, are HERE.

Speaker Boehner: women matter, and the Republican attacks on women need to end.
