Democrats aren’t taking House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s takedown of Rep. Spencer Bachus lightly.

Following a POLITICO report earlier Thursday that Cantor forced Bachus, the House Financial Services Committee chair, to reverse course on legislation that would crack down on congressional insider trading, the bill’s top backers lashed out at Cantor’s decision to pressure Bachus to back down.

“I was completely surprised and taken aback to find that the Republican leadership had yanked it off the agenda and stopped the process from going forward,” Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) said. “This is something that 99 percent of the Americans agree [with] completely.”

On Tuesday, Bachus called for a Dec. 14 markup on the STOCK Act, which would explicitly bar insider trading among members of Congress and federal workers. The bill, which stands for “Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge,” languished in obscurity before a “60 Minutes” investigation in November propelled it onto committee agendas and to more than 200 co-sponsors.

Joining Woodside residents, Team Maloney spent Monday at Woodside Houses "Clean Up the Grounds" Day participating in activities such as cleaning up around a garden honoring American troops.

"I want to thank all my residents here in Woodside, the children, for coming out and making this a successful day. And I want to thank Congresswoman Maloney for bringing some of her great folks to come and help us on this day. JORDAN

Jordan first got involved with the Maloney campaign because he thought it “would be a great way to learn about the election process and make a tangible difference.”  Jordan wanted to work for Carolyn because her political philosophies strongly mirror his own. And, “her work to help find a cure for Parkinson’s Disease, as a co-founder of the Congressional Working Group on Parkinson's Disease, personally resonates with me, as I have an uncle who passed away from Parkinson’s and another uncle who suffers from Parkinson’s Disease.”  Jordan would like to see Carolyn re-elected because “her policies truly reflect the needs of the middle class. Whether it’s expanding health care, fighting for benefits for first responders, or passing the Credit CARD Act, Carolyn is always thinking of her constituents, rather than caving to the interests of the elite. As an experienced congresswoman who has served almost two decades in the House, Carolyn knows how to get things done and has shown again and again her ability to do so.”  The first thing Jordan did on the campaign was knock on doors and help with the petitioning process.  Although he was a bit nervous, Jordan quickly realized that his "unease was unfounded."  Jordan likes working for the Maloney campaign because he enjoys getting to know the other interns, as well as the constituents. There are so many diverse people from different backgrounds in Carolyn’s district whom he would never have the opportunity to meet.

SHIRLEY

Shirley wants to see Carolyn re-elected because “Carolyn has been relentlessly fighting for the well-being of New Yorkers. Her accomplishments have improved the lives of many Americans with her strong beliefs ranging from consumer rights to healthcare reform. As someone with both the experience and the energy, Carolyn deserves to continue representing her district.”  Shirley got involved in the campaign because, as a lifelong New Yorker, she believes it is extremely important to be an informed citizen. “Participating in the democracy that is America is a responsibility that I have, and a great way to begin the process was to get involved in a political campaign.”  The first thing Shirley did for the campaign was make phone calls to voters in the district.  She loves her work because the campaign team is so enthusiastic.  “It is amazing to meet such diverse supporters of Carolyn, not only on the campaign, but all across the district. I love working with every one of the interns and interacting with them on a daily basis has made work both progressive and enjoyable.”  Between now and Primary Day, Shirley is going to help Carolyn win by knocking on doors, making phone calls, and spreading the word about Carolyn’s accomplishments and the importance of being an informed New Yorker.         

PETER

Brian wants Carolyn to be re-elected because she never stops fighting for New Yorkers.  He got involved in the Maloney campaign because he thought “it would be a good experience and wanted to do more with my life.”  The first thing he did for the campaign was talk to voters in Long Island City.  The thing he likes best about working on the Maloney campaign is meeting and talking to other supporters of Carolyn.  He also likes how he goes to many new places that he wouldn’t have known about otherwise.  Brian is going to help Carolyn win between now and Primary Day by continuing to work hard on her behalf.       

YULIYA 

Yuliya wants Carolyn to be re-elected because “Carolyn Maloney has done everything in her power to help New Yorkers during the past eighteen years, including writing vital legislation to make the lives of her constituents better. Carolyn will not stop fighting for New Yorkers in the future and thus should remain the Congresswoman in this district.”  She got involved in the Maloney campaign because she wanted to learn the basics of how a campaign is run and thought “what better way than in a campaign where the candidate has done so much for her constituents.”  The first thing Yuliya did for the Maloney campaign was participate in the Fireworks in Astoria event where she helped with the petitioning process to put Carolyn’s name on the ballot.  “It was a great first event because I saw right away the immense support Carolyn had throughout her District.”  The thing she likes best about working for the Maloney campaign is “knowing that I am a direct link between the Congresswoman and her constituents. It is a great feeling to share Carolyn’s numerous accomplishments for New York directly with her voters.”  Between now and Primary Day Yuliya will work to re-elect Carolyn by “communicating with as many voters as possible, by making phone calls and by knocking on doors, to tell them about the things Carolyn has achieved for them and the importance of their support in the September 14th Primary.”            

Anna

Anna first got involved in the Maloney campaign because she wanted to spend her summer doing something meaningful, and wished to be a part of something that would make a difference in the lives of New Yorkers.   She is also interested in politics, and wanted to see how the whole process of a campaign works.  Anna wants Congresswoman Maloney to be re-elected because Maloney has “ done many amazing things for New York City and has been working very hard for New Yorkers for almost twenty years, and I think she deserves to keep her position. New Yorkers need an experienced and passionate leader like Carolyn.”  On her first day volunteering for the campaign, Anna made phone calls, passed out flyers, and knocked on doors: “a great way to see the different jobs she would be doing in the future, and the types of things that came with each job.”  Anna’s favorite parts of the campaign are “the friendly people, like the fellows and other interns, as well as the feeling that I am helping make New York City even better by re-electing a great leader.”  Between now and Primary Day Anna plans to “make lots of successful phone calls and canvassing passionately.”

Eva

Eva got involved in the Maloney campaign because she wanted “to help support and get support for a great Congresswoman that has done a lot for her people.  There are a lot of people that we need to reach to inform them about the upcoming primary and general election and ask them to help show their support by voting. There are also people who do not know much about Carolyn and we need to inform them about her accomplishments and her agenda.”  She would like to see the Congresswoman re-elected because “Carolyn tries her best to help improve, not only the people that live in her district, but all of New Yorkers' lives. In addition to bringing federal funds to open up jobs for New Yorkers, in building the Second Avenue Subway and the Eastside-Long Island Railroad Connector, these two infrastructures will make the travels of public transport riders easier. She also fought to increase Pell Grants and lower interest rates for federal student loans, which really affect the lives of college students and high school seniors, who are applying for college this coming school year.”  The first thing Eve did on the Maloney campaign was knock on doors for Maloney.  She loves working on the campaign because she is “able to inform other people about what great work Carolyn Maloney has done in Congress for the people. Some people who have lived in her district for years might have never heard of her and would ask “Who is she?” It is also a great experience to be able to tell these people what she has done to improve the lives of theirs, along with other New Yorkers. It is also an enjoyable experience to meet and work alongside people who support your views.” 

Jackie wants Carolyn to be re-elected because “she has done so much to help New Yorkers and she doesn’t just rely on other people to talk to voters. She lets them know herself how she can and will help them.”  Jackie decided to get involved in the Maloney campaign after doing some research on the Congresswoman and seeing how much Carolyn had accomplished and how many people she had helped.   The first thing Jackie did for the Maloney campaign was help with the petitioning process to get Carolyn on the ballot.  Jackie likes working for the Maloney campaign because she’s able to talk to the voters about how much the Congresswoman has done.   She also “likes getting to listen to the different speakers that come to the weekly field meeting.”  Jackie pledges to help Carolyn win re-election by continuing to talk to as many voters as she can so they know the importance of voting for Carolyn on September 14^th.

Nayeem wants Carolyn to be re-elected because “she never stops fighting for New York! Carolyn has done everything she could to ensure District 14 gets what they need. She’s made her constituents happy and deserves to continue to do what she does best, fighting for each and every New Yorker.”  Nayeem first got involved in the Maloney campaign because he wanted to "to connect with many people with various backgrounds. I wanted to experience a campaign on a hands-on level.”  When he started the campaign, he helped organize canvass packets, “which might seem like a small task, but every task counts! Organizing canvass packets eventually led to knocking on doors in Stuytown.”  Nayeem likes working on the campaign because he can “connect with so many people every day, whether I am petitioning, canvassing or phonebanking. There’s nothing like calling through sheets with ten or thirteen names on them and watching them eventually stack up. This really throws an image of what it takes to win a campaign in District 14 even with someone as well qualified as Carolyn.”  Between now and Primary Day, Nayeem plans to “reach out to as many voters as humanly possible.  I’ll inform as many voters as possible about all the things that Carolyn has done for District 14. I’ll phonebank until my ears, knees and fingers give in. I’ll canvass until my legs give out. I’ll petition until I’ve talked to every person that has set foot on my block.”

Nick

Nick first got involved in the Maloney campaign because he was “moved by Carolyn’s dedication to New Yorkers.  I was touched when I heard how long she’s been working to provide healthcare to the 9/11 firefighters.”  He wants to see Carolyn re-elected because she never stops fighting for New York.  On his first day working on the campaign, Nick marched in the Pride Parade.  “It was a lot of fun, seeing the way the gay community loves Carolyn.  She’s been one of the biggest advocates for gay marriage in congress, and obviously her commitment to the cause hasn’t been forgotten.”  Nick likes working for the Maloney campaign because he’s part of something bigger than himself.  “It’s a tough job, but it’s rewarding when I think that every person that I can encourage to vote will bring Carolyn back to office and she can continue fighting for New York.”  Between now and Primary Day, Nick will help get Carolyn re-elected by “letting the voters know what Carolyn has done for them during the past 17 years she’s been in office.  Few politicians fight as hard for their constituents on a daily basis as Carolyn has since she’s been elected Congresswoman.  Carolyn fights to make sure that the voice of every New Yorker is heard, and the people that she represents need to know that.”

Shuwen got involved in the Maloney campaign because he’s really interested in politics.  He wants to see Carolyn re-elected because “Congresswoman Maloney has authored lots of great legislation and she will definitely keep doing so in her next term.  I really like her Credit Cardholders’ Bill of Rights and how she helped students pay for college.”  The first thing Shuwen did for the Maloney campaign was help with the petitioning process on the Upper East Side.  He likes volunteering for the Maloney campaign because he’s able to talk to both nice and interesting people.  Shuwen is going to help Carolyn win between now and Primary Day by putting in time and effort from now to September 14^th. 

Will

Will got involved in the Maloney campaign because he understand the importance of having a strong, progressive voice in Congress.  He wants to see Carolyn re-elected because he truly believes her Credit Cardholders’ Bill of Rights is a critical first step in protecting citizens from unfair lending practices, and is a piece of legislation that will truly affect every consumer in the nation.  The first thing Will did for the Maloney campaign was within 24 hours of arriving in NYC, helping to prepare for a major event, which included organizing the guest list, making nametags, and greeting guests.   The thing Will likes best about working for the Maloney campaign is learning about our political system while working for an experienced legislator, and meeting many interesting people I would not have otherwise crossed paths with.  Between now and Primary Day, Will pledges to enthusiastically engage as many constituents and potential supporters as possible in the campaign, via phone and in person.

ALEC - MANHATTAN

Alec wants Carolyn to be re-elected to Congress because "she is not afraid to stand up to Wall St. and big business and because she always fights for the common man."  He's always been interested in politics and is interning for Carolyn's campaign because he felt it would be a great learning experience.  The first thing Alec did for the Maloney campaign was help with the petitioning process in Peter Cooper Village.  Alec likes working on the Maloney campaign because he's able to visit neighborhoods that he's never had the opportunity to explore.  Between now and Primary Day Alec is going to help Carolyn win by knocking on doors and calling voters to help GET OUT THE VOTE!

GABRIEL - TEANECK

Gabriel got involved in the Maloney campain because he's "been a fan of her work in Congress."  When he heard about the internship opportunity he just had to come out and help.  Gabriel wants Carolyn to be re-elected because she is willing to stand up to Wall Street to prevent another economic collapse, and because of her commitment to increase transportation options for New Yorkers by getting federal funding for the Second Avenue subway.  The first thing Gabriel did for the Maloney campaign was to help with the petition process.  Gabriel likes working on the campaign because he's able to "walk around the city and listen to people share their opinions about the campaign."  Between now and Primary Day Gabriel is going to help Carolyn win by "continuing to talk to my fellow citizens (knocking doors, making phone calls, and more) about why Carolyn deserves to be sent back to Washington to keep fighting for us"

Gareth wants Carolyn to be re-elected because "I strongly believe in her social and economic priorities (everything from immigration to healthcare), and, as far as the Second Avenue Subway goes, will be a grateful beneficiary of her efforts in Congress."  Gareth first got involved in the campaign because he always wanted to be involved in politics in some way.  And what better way to do that than to experience a campaign in the city he loves and working for a Congresswoman he supports?  The first time he volunteered with the Maloney campaign he went door to door campaiging.  Gareth enjoys the volunteer experience because he likes "meeting the people – the amazing diversity of Maloney supporters, the people who show boundless appreciation for our work to help her get re-elected, and, of course, the other people working on the campaign."  Between now and primary day Gareth is going to help Carolyn win by "doing what we’ve always been doing: reaching out to voters and telling them what Carolyn has done, and why they should vote for her."

LINDA - FOREST HILLS

Linda got involved in the Maloney campaign because she was interested in interning for a campaign this summer.  She looked for a local politician whose policies she supported and who had an impressive track record. Carolyn Maloney was her choice.  Linda wants to see Carolyn re-elected because "she is a fighter for everything she believes in.  She has passed great legislation in the past that has improved the conditions of her community. She has fought for women, for health care, for jobs, and for consumer protection with her Credit Card Bill of Rights. Even though she has done so much, she still understands that there is much more that can be accomplished. I want Carolyn to be reelected to get the job done."  Linda likes working on the campaign because she's "working with so many people who care about what they do and will work tirelessly to get Carolyn reelected."  She loves seeing enthusiastic supporters and voters who are behind Carolyn 100%.  Between now and Primary Day she is going to help Carolyn win by "making phone calls asking for support, going canvassing door to door telling voters about Carolyn’s policies, and helping enter data to make sure the database is updated and running smoothly and efficiently."

DIWAKAR - FOREST HILLS

Diwakar got involved in the Maloney campaign because "the Congresswoman is one of the best members of Congress and I wanted to be part of the team that helps keep her in Washington."   He wants to see her re-elected because she has "procured funds for the construction of the Second Avenue Subway line, which will make the commute in Manhattan much easier for me and many New Yorkers.  Carolyn has also helped make college more affordable by fighting to increase the amount of aid given to college students, which has helped me and many of my friends.  Since the Congresswoman’s work has helped me and many of my friends."  The first thing Diwakar did for the campaign was help increase the Congresswoman’s visibility by convincing local business leaders to put campaign signs in their windows.  What he likes most about working for the Maloney campaign is "telling voters about Carolyn’s stances on the issues because I know after hearing them, they will support the Congresswoman."  Between now and the election Diwakar is going to contribute to Carolyn’s victory by "informing as many voters possible about how much the Congresswoman has helped her constituents and the country."

TYLER - MANHATTAN

Tyler wants Carolyn to be re-elected because of all the hard work she’s done for the city and the country - "we need more congress people like her, fighting for us."  He first got involved in the Maloney campaign because he believed in Carolyn.  He's learning a lot about how to run a campaign if he runs for office someday.  The first thing he did for the Maloney campaign was march in the Gay Pride Parade.  Tyler likes being part of the campaign because of all the cool people he's met.  Between now and the election Tyler is going to do everything he can to get Carolyn’s message out to the voters of NY District 14.

We’re off to an impressive start for 2010, and I can’t tell you how grateful I am to have your support.  With your help we reached our first quarter fundraising goal and our grassroots base has swelled to thousands of supporters.  That foundation will be crucial in helping to get our message out in the coming months.

After seventeen years of service Carolyn Maloney is still one of the hardest working leaders in Congress.  Just this year she's introduced or co-sponsored landmark legislation in areas including women’s rights, consumer protections, and financial reform.  

But now Carolyn needs our help.
