Healthcare is a human right

Healthcare touches every part of our lives, and must be defended and expanded. Carolyn has been a champion for all facets of American healthcare, from voting to fund universal vaccination programs to fighting to protect reproductive healthcare, to defending the ACA from GOP sabotage, and ensuring pre-existing condition protections for all Americans. ​

  • Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, Carolyn has fought to support healthcare workers with the Student Loan Forgiveness for Health Care Workers Act and the Pandemic Heroes Compensation Act.
     

  • In February, called for free testing, treatment and vaccinations for COVID-19, and held the first House hearing featuring Dr. Fauci, where he confirmed that the Trump administration’s lack of preparedness meant the crisis was going to get worse. 

 

  • Protecting the Affordable Care Act, which provides pre-existing condition coverage for over 135 million Americans, from GOP and denouncing efforts to defund the critical program. 

 

  • Advocating for the lowering of prescription drug prices, voting for the Strengthening Health Care and Lowering Prescription Drug Costs Act (H.R. 987) in 2019, and calling for meetings to discuss the anti-competitive practices of the prescription market. 

 

  • Promoting women's health by introducing legislation aimed at increasing the ease with which women can breastfeed (H.R. 2758). Carolyn has also fought to create a program aimed at researching the harm posed by additives in feminine hygiene products (H.R. 2566).

 

  • Consistently advocating for reproductive healthcare by fighting to ensure that women can exercise their right to choose and supporting Planned Parenthood.

 

  • Working to preserve and expand CHIP and SNAP benefits that help keep our kids healthy, including preventative care, immunizations, and regular doctors' visits.

 

  • Introducing legislation that recognizes the importance of protecting health abroad by providing increased funding to the United Nations Population Fund, the Afgan Woman Empowerment Act of 2009, and support for ending obstetric fistula. 

 

  • Sponsor, H.R. 4129: Medicare Demonstration of Low Vision Devices Act of 2019. Solidifying her support for expanding Medicare coverage, Carolyn introduced a bill that allocates funding for a project that evaluates the feasibility of covering low vision devices under the Medicare program. 

 

  • Sponsor, H.R. 674: Gun Violence Prevention Research Act of 2019. Reduces the negative impact of firearms funding research into gun violence by the CDC. 

 

  • Sponsor, H.R. 2182: Access to Birth Control Act. Declares birth control a universal right and increases national availability. Introduced in 2013. 

 

  • Sponsor, H.R. 2646: Stop Deceptive Advertising for Women's Healthcare Services Act of 2019. Prevents organizations from falsely promoting reproductive health care services that they do not administer.

 

  • Sponsor, H.R. 847: James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010. Creates a fund to ensure that the health impacts of the 9/11 attacks are addressed thoroughly and provide grants to affected individuals 

 

  • Sponsor, H.R. 949: Women’s Health Office Act of 2005. Establishes an office within the Department of Health and Human Services specifically dedicated to protecting women's health.

 

  • Co-Sponsor, H.R.1384: Medicare for All Act of 2019. As a proud long-time supporter of single-payer healthcare, Carolyn has worked to see that every American has access to affordable health insurance. In addition to seeking further protections for healthcare, the Congresswoman has repeatedly voted in favor of strengthening Medicare and Medicaid with bills such as the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (H.R. 2). Introduced by Rep. Pramila Jayapal. 

 

  • Co-Sponsor, H.R. 555: Disability Integration Act of 2019. Prohibits insurance providers from discriminating against those with disabilities that require long-term services and care. Introduced by Rep. James Sensenbrenner Jr.
