Local members of congress slam Trump’s desire to end birthright citizenship

A handful of New York City Democratic members of Congress are slamming President Donald’s Trump’s remarks Tuesday that he would like to end birthright citizenship for some U.S.-born children.
Trump made the comments to “Axios on HBO” ahead of midterm elections that he has sought to focus on his hardline immigration policies.
Revoking birthright citizenship would spark a court fight over whether the president has the unilateral ability to change an amendment to the Constitution. The 14th Amendment guarantees that right for all children born in the U.S.
Asked about the legality of such an executive order, Trump said, “they’re saying I can do it just with an executive order.”
But that didn’t sit well with Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who represents parts of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.
“Hey @realDonaldTrump, ever hear of the #14thAmendment?” tweeted Maloney, quoting the amendment. “‘All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.'”
Rep. Adriano Espaillat echoed Maloney’s sentiments, tweeting, “#Trump cannot pick and choose which parts of the Constitution he wants to uphold and which parts he simply wants to defy. This is not how the process works & I am prepared to fight with tooth and nail to prevent this Administration from ending #BirthrightCitizenship #Constitution.”
Espaillat further wrote, “Ridiculous! I’m prepared to fight from the Halls of Congress to the White House to ensure #Trump knows that he cannot simply defy the law and our nation’s Constitution … This is another one of #Trump’s political stunts and he’s feeding red meat to his base – 7 days before the midterms. We will NOT sit quietly and allow any of this to happen.”
Rep. Yvette Clark agreed, tweeting, “45 can’t make any changes to the Constitution via Executive Order. Trump is desperate to distract from the GOP’s ongoing efforts to gut protections for pre-existing conditions, raise taxes for middle-class families, and dismantle our democracy. Period.”
And Rep. Jose Serrano, whose district includes the Bronx, tweeted, “No matter what the President says, #BirthrightCitizenship is protected by the Constitution’s 14th Amendment. He can’t do this on his own through Executive Action, this is clearly just another effort to fuel anti-immigrant rhetoric that deepens our country’s divisions.”
