“For the second time this month, we have seen the murder of police officers, whose only offense was working to keep the peace and protect the communities in which they serve. The ambush in Baton Rouge on Sunday is not only heartbreaking because of the loss for the department and the officers’ friends and families, but also because it highlights a deepening and growing divide between police departments and the people they serve. My thoughts and prayers are with the Baton Rouge community as they mourn this loss.
“Now is the time for us to come together, to seek justice, peace and trust among community members and those meant to protect us. It is up to us to bridge the gap that divides us, to face head-on the underlying issues that manifest into such violence and hatred. We are better than this.”
